Fish Pie tells the tale of a misunderstood boy, called Simon, who gets transported into the animal kingdom of Fish Pie Island. A kingdom that lies hidden in the undergrowth of the nature reserve at the end of the mystical island.
Simon is thrust into a journey of friendship and adventure as he is welcomed into the lives of the animals. There he learns about life on the river Thames and the habits and habitats of the animals that live there.
We also learn the musical history of the island and of London. Each animal represents a different musical era, so each time Simon meets a new friend, he not only gains knowledge about its habits and habitats but he is also inspired about all sorts of different music and the music of London.
The characters are well rounded and very funny. They are all based on people who have lived on Eel Pie Island or close friends of the creator Vicky Steane.
This book doesn’t shy from difficult topics and emotions.
Fish Pie is based on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham. Eel Pie Island has a rich musical history and is a place of national interest, due to its uniqueness, its musical history and the creativity of the artists and musicians that currently live and work there. Many bands that are household names today such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, Rod Stewart, to name just a few, started off on Eel Pie Island. It is a private island, only accessible to the public on artist 'open studio' days. On these open days thousands of people travel from all over England to come and visit Eel Pie Island.
Fish Pie prides itself on teaching younger people about friendship, the environment of The River Thames and the musical history of London.
